Challenge League - Summer Games

A small number of games will be played in the summer months before the league resumes proper for all teams in September.

Ehime FC Ladies  3 - 1  Tokiwagi Gakuen High School
(Attendance: 420)

In extreme temperatures in Ehime, the home side followed up their fine performance against Vegalta Sendai with a 3-1 win over high-flying Tokiwagi Gakuen. Last week's debutants for Ehime, goalkeeper Mitsuhira and the impressively busy midfielder Ogawa Manami started again in this game, while Tokiwagi recalled some of their younger players to the starting lineup, namely Sugihara, Kawasaki and Nishikawa.

In the first half Ehime piled on the pressure but were unable to break down the Tokiwagi defence, while at the same time they kept the league's top scorer Michigami at bay. Eventually the breakthrough came with ten minutes remaining, which led to a flurry of goals.

Yamashiro Miyuki scored her first goal of the season to give Ehime the lead, with captain Nakada doubling it within a minute. With five minutes remaining Michigami pulled one back to give Tokiwagi hope for the final few minutes. Just two minutes later those hopes were dashed as defender Kushiyama Saki scored the game's final goal to give three precious points to Ehime.

Tokiwagi remain fourth in the table, while Ehime jump over Shizuoka into seventh. Nakada Maiko's goal now puts her sixth in the scoring rankings, while Michigami continues to lead the pack by some distance. Both sides next play in September.

Nittaidai Football Club Ladies  6 - 1  Japan Soccer College Ladies
(Attendance: 98)

Nittaidai bounced back after two consecutive losses - losses which have eroded almost completely their chances of winning the division - with a comprehensive victory over JSCL. In the first half the students completely dominated, with JSCL not allowed to muster a single shot on goal. For Nittaidai, top scorer Uemura was rested ahead of the U-20 World Cup, and it was left to Shimada to score her first goal in five games to give them the lead early in the first half.

Shimada had to wait until fifteen minutes after the restart before claiming her second and two minutes later Yamaguchi scored her third goal in her first four games for the side to relax her team. Sato Minami scored a brace in the last twenty minutes - her first goals of the season - which came either side of a Toriumi Mai consolation for JSCL. With time running out substitute Ozeki Miyu scored her first of the campaign.

Nittaidai are next in action in September, and only have four games remaining. JSCL next play on Sunday, at home to Bunnys, and will be desperate to avoid a repeat of the 5-1 drubbing they received in Kyoto.

Shizuoka Sangyo University Iwata Bonita  0 - 4  Bunnys Kyoto SC
(Attendance: 154)

Having not scored in seven games, and having lost their last match by twelve goals, Bunnys Kyoto surprised everyone by dominating against their hosts Shizuoka in the warm summer sunshine. Shizuoka local Ii Kiyono headed home a Watanabe Juri free kick for the opening goal ten minutes before half-time to stun the students.

Hanazaki Rena scored twice in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half to put Bunnys in control, and in doing so became the first Bunnys player to score two goals in a match. Despite the shots ratio being 15:7 in favour of Shizuoka, neither of their top strikers Oda Kanna nor Okuda Mika could find a way past Akiyama, and both were eventually substituted; their replacements were Ichikawa Miku and Takahata Airi, who were both making their first appearances this season.

In injury time substitute Hattori Sae picked up the ball from a throw-in and hammered home her first of the season for an emphatic Bunnys win.

Bunnys' next game is away to JSCL on the fifth of August, and a win there will take them seven points clear of the relegation zone. Shizuoka's next game is against promotion favourites and fellow students FC Takahashi. That game is not until September.

AC Nagano Parceiro Ladies  0 - 4  Sfida Setagaya FC
(Attendance: 230)

Another heavy defeat for Nagano, and with a daunting visit to Sendai to come in their next game, a defeat which may mean entry into the promotion/relegation playoffs later in the year. Setagaya kept up their charge towards the promotion spots, but with a seven point gap to Takahashi in second, it's looking increasingly like a forlorn hope.

Tanaka Mariko opened the scoring in the eleventh minute, her fifth strike in twelve games. The ever-impressive Ishibuchi Yuki then added two more to crush Nagano's hopes before half-time; Ishibuchi's 13th goal putting her fourth in the scoring charts.

In additional time at the end of the game, local girl Kuwahara Yoshie scored on her debut, having come on midway through the second half. Setagaya's next game is away to the improving Ehime, while as mentioned above Vegalta Sendai and new signing Sameshima Aya host Nagano.

Japan Soccer College Ladies  5 - 0  Bunnys Kyoto SC
(Attendance: 82)

Having pulled themselves clear of the relegation battle with their 4-0 win over Shizuoka, Bunnys Kyoto will be furious to have allowed themselves to be so comprehensively beaten by JSCL, who are back to within a point of their rivals.

Toriumi Mai continued her impressive scoring run with the first two goals in this game, making it six goals in five games for the captain, a week after her 21st birthday. Iwasaki Manami made the game safe just before half-time, fine reward for having contributed to the first two goals also.

In the second half Sasaki Shiori and Shanou Miki both scored for the first time in a long time to add gloss to the scoreline, and with four games to go, will be hoping for more to overtake Bunnys. The Kyoto team next play Je Vrille Kagoshima on September 2nd hoping to regain a four-point lead. JSCL next play on September 16th.

Je Vrille Kagoshima  2 - 0  Bunnys Kyoto SC
(Attendance: 283)

Neither side many any changes to their starting lineups for this crucial battle at the lower reaches of the table. Having been comprehensively beaten by the JSCL, Bunnys needed to recover their form entering the final stages. Kagoshima were in no mood to entertain such thoughts and their 2-0 win moves them five points clear of JSCL in ninth with a game in hand. Both goals were scored by Nakashima Ayaka and she scored them within a minute of each other towards the end of the first half - her fifth and sixth goals of the season making her Kagoshima's top scorer.

Kagoshima's next game is a tough assignment away to Tokiwagi Gakuen in Miyagi Stadium, while Bunnys' next game is not until the 23rd, a home game against Vegalta Sendai, which they dare not dream they can win.

Challenge League Sixteenth Round

Vegalta Sendai Ladies  3 - 1  Ehime FC Ladies
(Attendance: 1,061)

In the early stages of the season, Vegalta Sendai had travelled to Ehime in high spirits following their impressive start to the season and cruised to an easy 8-0 victory which featured an Ito Minako hat-trick. Despite Ito's continued absence due to injury, the large expectant crowd felt that a comfortable victory would be on the cards. Ehime started with Mitsuhira in goal for the first time having recovered from injury, and also gave a first start to the diminutive 18-year-old Ogawa Manami.

For much of the first half Vegalta did all of the attacking, but without a tall striker to aim at - both teams started with one up front - they found breaking down the Ehime midfield difficult. Finally, just as the first half was coming to a close, a loose ball was picked up by Yasumoto who struck early, lobbing the Ehime keeper who had advanced from her goal line.

In the second half Ehime felt they had nothing to lose and starting to put some pressure on the Sendai goal, hitting the post midway through the first half. At this stage new recruit Kawashima Haruna replaced Takahashi Nana for Sendai in midfield and she set about endearing herself to the Vegalta faithful with some fine attacking play.

However, it was Ehime's inspirational captain and Miyagi local Nakada Maiko who turned the game when she stretched for a long Nishigawa pass and managed to strike home just before Sendai goalkeeper Saita Yuki could reach it.

Sendai didn't panic, but it was great misfortune for the debutant in the Ehime goal which gave them the lead. Mitsuhira attempted to clear the ball following a backpass, but she only succeeded in striking the ball against the onrushing Koyama Kie and the ball ricocheted into the back of the net.

The sense of disappointment for the Ehime players was clearly visible and their attempts to find another equaliser were heavy-hearted. In the third minute of injury time substitute Sakai Yuki scored her third goal in three matches to make the final result appear more comfortable than it actually was.

Ehime are at home next Saturday to the other Sendai team, Tokiwagi Gakuen. Vegalta Sendai now have a break until September.

Bunnys Kyoto SC  0 - 12  FC Takahashi Kibikokusaidaigaku Charme
(Attendance: 200)

Bunnys' disappointment at losing by seven goals to Tokiwagi Gakuen was compounded when they were comprehensively torn asunder by the visiting students of Takahashi, who last season won one of their meeting with Bunnys by thirteen goals. On that occasion Nishikawa Asuka scored a hat-trick on her way to becoming the Challenge League West's top scorer. Today she didn't score, but was the creator and provider in midfield.

Takahashi Chiho will be pleased with her brace on her return to the starting lineup, Matsushita and Fukui both scored their first goals this year, crowd favourites Takano and Sugita added to their tallies and Kurakazu continued her blistering recent form in scoring six goals.

Bunnys are away to Shizuoka on the 29th of July, while Takahashi's next game is also against Shizuoka, in September.

Shizuoka Sangyo University Iwata Bonita  2 - 5  Tokiwagi Gakuen High School
(Attendance: 179)

Tokiwagi's Michigami once again scored early to give the visitors the lead, but Shizuoka struck back quickly to make it 2-1 with thirteen minutes gone. Oda Kanna and Okuda Mika were their scorers; both players have now scored seven each.

The lead was not to last long. Midway through the first half Michigami struck again after some confusion in the Shizuoka defence, and at half-time the score was two apiece.

Shizuoka were a match for the schoolgirls in the second half, but from four attempts Tokiwagi scored three goals. From midfield Sasaki Miwa and Hirata Miki scored one each, both goals created by Horii Mizuki. In the final minute Michigami headed home for her sixth hat-trick of the season.

(Attendance: 150)

Setagaya captain Kawashima Tamai smashed home a 90th minute winner for Sfida Setagaya which renewed their hopes of catching Takahashi in the race for promotion. Neither side made much impression on goal in the first half but in the second the game became more open and chances fell to both sides, with Nittaidai's top striker Uemura Shoko missing three chances to score.

Setagaya move to within ten points of Takahashi with a game in hand and with the two teams meeting in October in the middle of a run of four difficult games for the students.

Nittaidai are in action twice in the next week, playing JFA Academy on Thursday followed by a home game against JSCL on Sunday.

JFA Academy Fukushima  3 - 0  Nittaidai Football Club Ladies
(Attendance: 42)

Nittaidai's second defeat in a matter of days appears to have dashed their chances of winning the Challenge League, and has given Sfida Setagaya a chance to catch them, six points behind but with two games in hand. Kamimura Aya started her first game in goal this season for Nittaidai, but disaster was to strike as in the fourth minute she was sent off for impeding an Academy player. Yamaguchi Minami made way for replacement keeper Aoyagi Maririn and with little forward presence for the students the JFA Academy girls eased their way to victory.

Masuya Rika scored her sixteenth of the season in the ninth minute to take her clear in second place in the scoring charts. Early in the second half her through ball fed the ever-impressive Kojima Miku who slotted home her fifth of the season. With five minutes remaining another U-17 World Cup hopeful Narumiya Yui scored from midfield, with Kojima this time the provider.

The Academy players next play on the fifth of August while Nittaidai next play in September.

(Attendance: 302)

Last week's hat-trick heroine Nagasawa Yume struck again to take her total to seven goals in this, her debut season. A ball knocked goalwards by Fukuhara resulted in a free-for-all and it was Nagasawa who kept her head to score the decisive goal.

Japan Soccer College Ladies  0 - 8  Vegalta Sendai Ladies
(Attendance: 210)

Vegalta Sendai's travelling fans were well rewarded for their trip to Niigata as their team as expected ran out easy winners against bottom side JSCL. By half-time the score was 3-0 with two goals from Shimokuzuru and one from Nakahara Saori, taking her season's total to nine. Ito Minako, Sendai's top scorer, did not play in this game having limped off early last week in the match against FC Takahashi.

Sendai continued where they left off in the second half, with another goal for Shimokuzuru coming in the middle of four other goals, two for Koyama and one each for Kakazu and one for Ono.

Sendai's next game is at home to Ehime, whom they also beat 8-0 earlier in the season, while JSCL will feel capable of getting a result against Nagano.

Third placed Nittaidai faced an embarrassing defeat when in the 27th minute, Niwa Mizuho scored to give Ehime a 2-0 lead, with Akune Mana scoring the first five minutes earlier - both women scoring their first goals of the season.

On 58 minutes Nittaidai brought on top scorer Uemura Shoko and within thirteen minutes she cut inside to score the winner to deny Ehime the chance to get into the top seven while giving themselves a chance of overtaking Takahashi in second.

Tokiwagi Gakuen High School  7 - 0  Bunnys Kyoto SC
(Attendance: 100)

Michigami Ayaka wasted no time in giving Tokiwagi the lead against Bunnys Kyoto. Her powerful run down the left wing was too much for her marker and her shot easily beat the onrushing Akiyama. That third minute goal was the first of four for Michigami. Her second came in the ninth minute, which added to Horii Mizuki's first goal of the season in the sixth minute, put the result beyond doubt before Bunnys had even got into their rhythm.

Bunnys composed themselves, reorganised and managed to gain some possession in midfield and defensively they managed to stifle the Tokiwagi attack. However Michigami's third goal in the 38th minute saw the depressed Bunnys side go in 4-0 down at half time.

The rain which has been incessant in the first half stopped for a time in the second half, but Michigami wasn't finished and she scored her fourth in the 51st minute to show off her good form in advance of the U-20 World Cup, the opening games of which take place a short walk from the stadium in which this game was played.

Hirata Miki and Yahata Asuka added two more goals to give Tokiwagi and extremely easy 7-0 win ahead of their trip to Shizuoka while Bunnys face Takahashi looking to shore up their defence.

FC Takahashi Kibikokusaidaigaku Charme  3 - 1  AC Nagano Parceiro Ladies
(Attendance: 350)

Takahashi kept the pressure on Vegalta Sendai at the top with a straightforward 3-1 win over strugglers Nagano. Takano Saki opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a screaming shot into the back of the net with Matsumoto powerless to stop it.

Into the second half and Sugita Ami became Takahashi's sole leading scorer with eight goals. In the 64th minute Nishikawa Asuka, like Takano looking forward to the U-20 World Cup this summer, made it 3-0 and Takahashi were coasting.

In the third minute of additional time, Urasaki Yuka scored a consolation goal for Nagano with what was only her side's second shot at goal in the entire game.

Takahashi march on to Kyoto next weekend where they will feel very confident of beating Bunnys, while Nagano hope to gain all three points against winless JSCL.

Challenge League Fourteenth Round

Vegalta Sendai Ladies  2 - 2  FC Takahashi Kibikokusaidaigaku Charme
(Attendance: 1,083)

In brilliant sunshine in Matsushima, near Sendai, the stage was set for a pivotal match in both sides' league campaigns. Vegalta Sendai were unbeaten coming into this game, while Takahashi, four points behind largely due to their home loss to Vegalta, came into this clash having shown their credentials with an eight goal demolition of JSCL. Kurakazu Shiho scored two of those goals in her first start, and she retained her place with Kanbara Misaki also coming into the side.

There was little between the sides in the early stages, but the game exploded into life when on ten minutes Takahashi won a corner and the tall Muramatsu Mafuyu leapt higher than everyone to score rather easily - her third goal from a corner kick set-piece in the last three games. For the rest of the half Vegalta looked to attack at every opportunity, with the stunned home crowd trying to lift their heroines. Yasumoto Sawako had replaced the injured Ito Minako as early as the nineteenth minute and she led the line, though the much taller Takahashi defenders dealt comfortably with Vegalta's aerial attack.

Takahashi became more defensive in the second half and looked to hit Vegalta on the break. Nishikawa Asuka - nicknamed "The Monster" - caused the Vegalta defence problems all afternoon with her power and aggression, and in the 71st minute joint top-scorer Takahashi Chiho joined the fray. Within a few minutes she found Takano Saki and her cross field ball to the left found Kurakazu with space and time. Although slightly slipping upon shooting, Amano Misaki in the Vegalta net could not get near the ball to prevent the shock 2-0 scoreline.

From this point on, Takahashi became extremely defensive, bringing on Kamata Ran in defence. However, this only invited Vegalta to attack in numbers, and finally in the 83rd minute Sakai Yuki powered her way through to score. With the home players and supporters lifted, Vegalta piled on the pressure and following a goal-line clearance from a Kakazu shot, Vegalta came forward in numbers for the resulting corner kick. Sakai rose powerfully and headed in the equaliser with four minutes remaining. Though continuing to come forward looking for a winner, Vegalta will feel relieved to have taken a point.

Takahashi go back to Okayama with their heads held high, and their players certainly enjoyed the occasion in front of a passionate crowd. The four point gap remains, and with Nittaidai closing to within one point after their victory, the pressure is still on the top two. With eight games remaining, both sides will look at their schedules and feel reasonably confident of finishing in their current positions.

Takahashi's Takano (10) looks to find Kanbara (27) while under pressure
from Yasumoto (11) who replaced Ito Minako early in the game

The Japan U-20 representative caused trouble for Vegalta all afternoon.

Until the final moments the Takahashi defence were
dominant in the air against Sendai's strikers.

Yamamoto kept command of her penalty area throughout the game.

Nittaidai closed the gap to Takahashi to one point with two late goals to beat Je Vrille Kagoshima, condemning their hosts to their ninth loss of the season.

Japan Soccer College Ladies  3 - 3  Ehime FC Ladies
(Attendance: 70)

JSCL have yet to win a game this season and will have regretted not seeing out this tie when 2-0 up with just over twenty minutes remaining. Captain Toriumi Mai scored both JSCL goals, and both were created by Iwasaki Manami. In the twelve minutes between the 69th and 81st minute Ehime scored thrice to turn the game around, their top scorer Nakada Maiko scored the first and then substitute Uesato Saki scored her first two goals this season, both coming within a minute of each other.

Having relinquished the lead, the JSCL players found the courage to come back to rescue a point when the creator of the first two goals, Iwasaki Manami hit a first time shot past Osako Hanako for a precious point.

JSCL stay bottom with just three points, while Ehime are mid-table with fifteen.

Shizuoka Sangyo University Iwata Bonita  0 - 7  Sfida Setagaya FC
(Attendance: 178)

Sfida Setagaya have frustrated their supporters this year, sometimes showing incredible attacking flair and intent and at other times succumbing to relatively weak opposition meekly. Today was a day they showed their better side, as they made a mockery of Shizuoka's decent defensive record, and of the defeat they suffered early in the season.

By half-time the score was 6-0 and both Maehara Ringo in goal and Ito Mari were substituted. The six Setagaya goals came from Oshima Sayuri with her fourth goal in four games, three from Nagasawa Yume - doubling her season's total - and one each from Fukuhara Nao and Ishibuchi Yuki. Ishibuchi scored another in the second half to take her total to eleven for the season.

Setagaya will feel confident of being able to take this kind of form into their next match against Kagoshima, while Shizuoka will be desperate to steady things at the back against JFA Academy on Monday.

Masuya's first goal came six minutes before half-time, with the ever-present Mizutani Yuki giving the final ball. Her second and third goal came in the 50th and 74th minutes, with Mizutani again supplying the final pass for the last goal, and Moriya Miyabi back in the side with the assist for the second goal.

AC Nagano Parceiro Ladies  1 - 3  Tokiwagi Gakuen High School
(Attendance: 212)

Having not scored in the previous four games, and having been clearly disappointed after the loss to Vegalta Sendai, Michigami Ayaka needed to pick herself up and she did so in emphatic fashion against Nagano today, scoring her first hat-trick since the fourth game of the season.

It wasn't until the 43rd minute that Michigami opened her account however, in the face of strong defensive resilience. Taking a pass from Matsuura Nagisa, she powered her way through to score. Nagano had an equaliser ten minutes into the second half though, Urasaki Yuka getting on the end of a Hamagaki pass to score her fourth of the season, and in the process become her side's lone leading scorer.

Nagano desperately needed a point to move them away from the bottom, but it was not to be as Michigami scored again in the 70th minute and then secured her hat-trick in the second minute of additional time, with Ito and Horii providing the final balls.

Tokiwagi will expect to win again next weekend when they host Bunnys Kyoto, while Nagano have the daunting task of taking on Takahashi.
