The 37th Empress' Cup Final Match

Final Match, played on December 27th:

Match 47:
Albirex Niigata Ladies  0 - 1  INAC Kobe Leonessa
(Attendance: 20,379)

INAC Kobe Leonessa won their fifth cup title, and third against Niigata, with the winning goal coming from Sawa Homare in her final appearance. Niigata started the game well, hassling the INAC players and preventing them from building attacks, but as the first half wore on the Kobe asserted themselves and began to open the Niigata defence more readily. Niigata's best chance came from Kojima Miku, who leapt high to head at goal but only found the waiting arms of Kaihori Ayumi. Just before the half-time whistle Nakajima Emi had the best chance for either side, with Fukumura Kanae diving well to save, assisted by Nakamura Kaede sliding in to prevent a follow-up.

Neither side created many open chances in the opening stages of the second half, and it appeared more likely as the game wore on that a set piece would be the key to winning the game. Niigata relied largely on a supply of crosses from both open play and set pieces from Kamionobe Megumi but they made little of the half-chances they created. Kobe still looked dangerous when they attacked at pace, with Sayama Momoko making a last-ditch tackle on Ohno to deny her. This however, only led to a corner kick for Kobe, on which count they outscored Niigata by eight to one over the course of the game, and it was to be their undoing. From Kawasumi's corner Sawa, who was unmarked despite her prominence at prior corner kicks, headed powerfully into the corner of the net for her first Cup Final goal for Kobe. Niigata pushed for an equaliser but were kept well at bay and Kaihori's net was rarely threatened. Kobe held on to win their first trophy since 2013 and for Niigata, there can only be hope of better in the future.

Match 45:
Nippon TV Beleza  1 - 1  Albirex Niigata Ladies
Albirex Niigata Ladies win 3-2 on penalties after extra time
(Attendance: 6,155)

Niigata progressed to their third final in five years when they beat favourites Beleza on penalties after another fine defensive performance to deny the league champions their chance at another double. Oishi Sayaka took advantage of a fortuitous deflection off Iwashimizu Azusa to score the lead goal after eleven minutes though Nakasato Yu scored later in the half to equalise. Both sides had decent chances in the second half and in extra time but couldn't find the net. The eventual hero was Niigata goalkeeper Fukumura Kanae who saved three Beleza penalties. Kobe took the lead with six minutes remaining in the first half, Ohno heading home after Takase had first headed on from a corner kick. Kobe's second decisive goal came just after the hour mark, Nakajima Emi finishing off a fine move down the right with Kawasumi and Kinga combining to unlock the Sendai defence. Match 42:
Albirex Niigata Ladies  2 - 0  JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies
(Attendance: 857)

After a scramble in the box from a Kamionobe corner, Saeki Aya poked home the opener after sixty-nine minutes and the second goal came from a moment of magic from Kamionobe, flicking the ball over both her own head and that of Sakuramoto Naoko to provide Oishi Sayaka with an easy chance to score a fine goal. Niigata take on Beleza for the right to appear in a third final in five seasons.

Nakamura Kaede leaps to block a shot from Kawamura Mari.
The Niigata defence was solid from beginning to end
Kamionobe Megumi created both goals for Niigata, the first from a routine corner kick,
the second from an anything-but-routine exhibition of skill
Fukusawa Risa tries one of several attempts JEF United made

Yamane Erina comes to the rescue after Yamazaki Marumi broke clear to shoot
Nakamura Kaede kept Sugasawa Yuika quiet throughout the game
The first goal came from defensive lapses. Here Sakuramoto Naoko attempts to clear but hits the ball off her own standing leg...

The Niigata players with a mixture of joy and relief, as JEF United had been exerting formidable pressure at the other end since the restart

Both sides did go close on occasion, with Naomoto hitting the crossbar for Urawa and Kawamura doing likewise for Sendai. In the end Inoue Ayaka scored the winning penalty for Sendai who progress to their second successive semi-final.

Brittany Cameron was commanding in goal in her first appearance in Sendai this year
Early in the game Urawa were on top and here forced a good save from Cameron

The same could not be said for Manya Miho, stretchered off with what may be a recurrence of her long-term injury

... with the Vegalta Sendai players able to do little but watch the ball hit the crossbar
Tahara Nozomi started her first game for Sendai this season
